Keith Darlin Awarded Coover Law Firm’s Working for Education Scholarship
Coover Law Firm is proud to announce that Keith Darlin has been awarded the Working For Education Scholarship for the Fall 2018 semester. This scholarship, worth $1,000, is awarded to deserving students who have a part-time or full-time job while attending college.
Keith is currently a student at the University of Cincinnati, pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. At the same time, he is employed as a Lead Test Engineer at GE Aviation in Dayton, Ohio, and also serves as an Electrician’s Mate First Class in the US Navy Reserves out of Cincinnati.
Keith grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, where he learned how to fix cars and milk cows. After high school, he knew there was only one direction his life was going. He was going to be a carpenter, building and repairing houses. So, Keith attended the local technical college to earn an Associates Degree in Carpentry/Building Trades; he was the first in his family to seek higher education after high school.
After his first year, Keith learned that he was quite curious about the world. He transferred to community college for an Electrical Engineering (EE) program. However, working and going to college for a degree in a field he knew nothing about quickly led to burnout. His uncle had been in the Navy for many years, and was always an inspiration to Keith’s family. As such, joining the Navy was an easy decision.
Keith finished out his second semester in the EE program and shipped out hours after completing his math final. He served for 11 years onboard two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. While on active duty, he earned his undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology and signed up for the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program, a rigorous 18-month training and qualification school which turns assorted youth of all backgrounds into nuclear power plant operators. A fast-paced and intense style of education, he was taught how to learn quickly and efficiently.
His experience in nuclear power has been a piece-meal of multiple engineering disciplines; electrical, mechanical, chemical, and of course, nuclear. This range of experience has allowed Keith to develop a strong fundamental understanding of complex integrated systems. He spent 11 years immersed in this field, but more significantly, 6 of those years were spent honing leadership and management abilities.
Currently, as a Lead Test Engineer at GE Aviation, Keith works in the power branch, which designs, tests, qualifies, and produces electrical generation and distribution systems for several aviation customers including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and the US Military. His job specifically involves designing and building test equipment, as well as directing the test procedures utilized to certify equipment operates within specification and meets federal aviation guidelines.
It can be somewhat like his service in the Navy in that they strive for the highest quality, while constantly emphasizing safety. There are a lot of moving parts that must work together efficiently and effectively to achieve the company’s goals and make sure nobody gets injured along the way.
Along with all the technical and management skills Keith has garnered in his career, he plans to use his Master’s in Business Administration to enter management positions in the civilian sector.
